What should I ask myself when choosing an email blasting tool?

Anytime you're choosing a nonprofit software tool you should ask yourself "Have I read the Idealware article?" Idealware provides great reviews on software for nonprofits.

Here are some more questions to ask yourself when choosing an email blasting tool:

  • Has it been adopted by peer organizations?
Prioritize using tools that have a good track record with organizations in your network, sector or community; early adoption of new tools only occasionally pays off, and the costs can be high.
  • How is the service, quality and values of the publishing organization?
Consider the vendor publishing the tool. Make sure their service and support are good and readily available, with a reputation for quality. In addition, try to work with providers who have demonstrated solidarity with your organizational values in concrete ways, rather than for-profit organizations that simply want to profit from your need to send bulk email
  • Is there good support for email templating?
Be sure that the tool you choose cuts down on "reinventing the wheel" time by providing some method of creating a reusable template for email blasts. Otherwise, you would have to rebuild the branded look of your emails every time you do a blast.
  • Would tool migration be difficult?
Always assert your ability to switch tools; avoid getting locked into long-term or exclusive contracts. Control your tools rather than the other way around.
  • How easy is it to migrate my data?
Don't start using a tool until you clearly understand how you can get your data out of it and use it elsewhere. In this context, "your data" means the email addresses and other contact info of the supporters on your list, and the records of which messages they have opened or responded to, if your tool tracks that.
